I lived in the area of Bountiful and had direct, although peripheral contact with the community of Bountiful members when I encountered them in Creston. I've seen Winston Blackmore from a distance a few times.

I’ve lived in the area of Creston for approximately two years. On at least six occasions, I was close enough to “catch” snatches of conversation (yeah, I’m nosy).

Mostly they were amongst girls in their teens. All seemed to be under the local merchants’ marketing spell. Giggles and happy interactions seemed the norm. It was of no consequence as to what was said, but the tone and flavor of these very short snippets of unfettered young polygamist babble sounded like common social intercourse for that age group, to me.

From casual distant observation, these groups were totally free, happy and normal, except for their dress (but then, Sikhs dress different, too) than any other knot of culturally defined youth. I say, from what I have witnessed in Creston personally, read, and cobbled together via inductive reasoning, and lateral, LSD enhanced thought processes, speaking as an Oracle now, “If you allow religious exemptions, religious oppression through moral judgment laws, of any kind, you will reap a harvest of social dishonesty and strife.”

This current “legal” dilemma is due to the confusion caused by the entrenchment of one religious view over another in law. Christians don’t believe in Polygamy. They (Emily Murphy and other Christian movements) have entrenched their views many times, as they did their racists views, through the exclusion of certain cultures (defined by their use of the “Black Candle” Hashish.)

Think about the trauma caused to our society by this law of prohibition of Cannabis throughout its history. Can you spot the crime organizations; general lawlessness, founded on that piece of morality based religious legislation?

There you go, the Oracle was right in his opinions.

The news just in: ONE 15 YEAR OLD GIRL WAS APPREHENDED ON THAT POLYGAMOUS RANCH IN TEXAS......ONE!

All this international news and Christian judgment concerning Polygamous terrorizing of children.

It's fewer than many Catholic parish priests have fornicated with and it hasn't been proven in court yet.

All the hair pulling because so many have been raised in "normal" families and are small minded enough to believe that its their way or the highway..

You are destined to be an oppressive person if you have strong beliefs. For these same reasons thousands die daily in other parts of the world and may one day here..

I agree that people should be free to practice their chosen religion and make their own lifestyle choices - polygamy is not something I would chose, but I don't see it as a moral OR legal issue. Polygamy is not synonymous with the FLDS. But I have to say that what's going behind closed doors in the Mormon polygamous communities in both Canada and the US becomes our business under the law when there are allegations of child abuse - and I think it's been fairly well documented that something strange is going on. The law should not turn a blind eye to alleged child abuse because of religious beliefs.

Robyn I don't agree with you about "alleged" child abuse.
You can see why first hand, if you read the story "I trusted the RCMP," from a guy who was falsely charged with allegations of child abuse. Allegations are brought forward for all kinds of nefarious well marketed reasons that don't mean diddley-squat. Abuse, when it occurs will become evident, because those who are abused will reveal it eventually. Until that occurs, what you have here is religious persecution of one group by another. Sure its a myopic group of religious nuts with quirky views, but then in my estimation so are the rest. There can be no equal to the amount of abuse the good Catholics rained down on children for decades and yet they are claiming the high ground here.

I hear you. But what about the stories we hear from people who have left the FLDS, the victims of this alleged abuse? One leader has already been sent to jail for setting up a marriage for an under-aged girl...

I'm just sayin...

Robyn, I don't mean to sound crass but, "So What?"
What about Ian Bush shot in the Back of the head by the RCMP? We have real problems which need looking after in our society now, which have a much greater priority (people are being killed by cops at the airport for not being able to speak English). Let's put this in perspective, When 15 year old girls were married to old men in last century England and NA, as it is still done in other cultures today, it was OK, and still is. These girls are not being abused. They are following their beliefs. When, and if, they are abused, we will hear about it and deal with that specific case.
Beware of "the sky is falling" syndrome. GWB used it and look what happened. Everything in an enlightened society should be a measured response, which isn't for the benefit of media spin.
One complaint about Warren Jess, in the states, is not any good reason for all this fury up here, in my eyes.
And because we have seen a few women who "escaped" interviewed on the Fifth Estate, it tells me that no one can be kept in there against their will.
Maybe the route that these former "abused" women should take is not through the press, but through the courts, or by some other direct means trying to enlighten and encourage their former co-wives to leave by marketing alternatives to them.
The best thing to remember is that until real documented abuse actually occurs it's none of our business.
