It's hard to take much from this sad case, except the fact that ANY surgery must be taken seriously. People also die from surgery as benign as getting their tonsils out, so any surgery must always be approached with the utmost in seriousness and caution.
Did her age have something to do with this? Possibly, however younger people tend to have more physical reserve in them to withstand trauma to their system. That's one reason why we are more aggressive with pre-operative screening in people over 40.
The plastic surgery industry does not take a hit with events like this, since most patients understand that crazy things can happen. It's normal for patients to be a bit nervous about surgery, because it is something that must be taken with appropriate caution. I think the main reason the media has jumped on this story is because she is a very attractive 18-year-old girl who had a cosmetic breast surgery. Would they be as interested if she had had a different elective procedure, like her tonsils out?

Re: Teenager Dies During Breast Implant Surgery
By Heather Wallace, March 28, 2008 at 13:41I guess there's always the idea that tonsils being taken out is a health issue and cosmetic surgery isn't "necessary," so people should consider whether they can accept themselves for who they are before exposing themselves to surgical risk. Either way, it's a sad case, and my sincere condolences to her family.

By Robyn Stubbs, March 28, 2008 at 13:47I think it's important to point out that she was undergoing corrective breast surgery - something about fixing an asymmetry? I don't think she was going for bigger breasts, just even ones... either way, it's pretty scary and reminds me that unless something is seriously wrong, I never want to go under the knife.

By Heather Wallace, March 28, 2008 at 13:55Yeah, I know, and I totally understand why she would do it...I just thought it would be good to throw out the idea of accepting our bodies, imperfections and all. Easier said than done. :)

Re: Under The Knife: Teenager Dies During Breast Surgery
By luyen, March 28, 2008 at 12:10That's very sad to hear, thanks for the sound advice Dr.Anthony - i always believe in getting a lot of second opinions, and listening to my own body as carefully as I can. This reminds me of a tragedy in eastern canada, where hundreds women were mis-diagnosed in the treatment they were supposed to receive for breast cancer, and many many of them have died since.
