While U.S is still facing an uphill task of liberating Afghanistan and Iraq from the remnants of Taliban and Iraqi insurgent forces and establishing western order of democracy and free society there, a quiet but concerted effort is on the way in Bangladesh by the U.S and the NATO Bloc.
Recent political events in Bangladesh, from the rise of fundamental Islamism to extremism, political unrest over electoral reforms to formation of the caretaker Govt., declaration of emergency and postponing of parliamentary election to formation of 3rd alternative of Nagarik Shakti (Citizen's Power) to the two existing major political parties Awami League, BNP and their allies, by Noble winner Mohd. Yunus, unfolded a whole new chapter in the political history of that country.
Among all the media reports doing rounds in recent times, in the report of eminent columnist, Kanchan Gupta in the Pioneer, titled, "Dhaka and Big Brother US", he has touched upon the events leading to the intervention of big brother US in following paragraphs:
"The US and its allies, which were increasingly alarmed by the rise of Islamism in Bangladesh during Begum Zia's rule, had pinned their hopes on the Awami League to check extremism if it won the scheduled poll. At the last minute, that hope gave way to despair when Sheikh Hasina signed a 'memorandum of understanding' with the stridently fundamentalist Khelaphat-e-Majlish, promising rapid Islamisation of state policy if voted to power.
