It should come as no surprise to anyone that I have an addictive personality; my latest outlet is the social networking site Facebook. I love that I can stay in touch with friends from all over the world and have a look at their page to see what's up in their lives. Friends and family mean the world to me, but there is only 24 hours in a day. Unfortunately, it's the people on the periphery of my life whom I do adore, but just don't have time to stay in contact with. Well, no more! All I have to do is poke them, hug them or write a quick 2-3 liner on their wall to let them know they are in my thoughts. However, recently, the darker side of Facebook preoccupied my thoughts.

There is a plethora of groups on Facebook - everything from good-humored competition with our American neighbors as to who can have the biggest group dedicated to setting a world's record for biggest group. There are groups for funny teacher quotes, cheap eats, and some useless ones like, "If 10,000 people join this group I will name my firstborn Spider-Man."

It was with shock that I heard about a group that was supposedly endorsing and congratulating violence against prostitutes, specifically a group out of Winnipeg called, "For those people who have thrown something at those lovely girls on Higgins."

I went to their group and read with complete horror and with tears in my eyes wall posts about throwing things at women on the street. One said he threw eight slurpees at one girl in a day and the "stupid b*tch never moved." Another threw Timbits donuts at women and enjoyed throwing them as he “got good aim.”

These people were praising each other, egging each other on to do more, and calling prostitutes every derogatory name in the book. One group member apparently had a sister who was on the streets and said she went into a rage every time someone confused her with her sister. The words she used to describe her own sister were appalling and she went to say how she herself threw things at the girls on the streets. It was truly nauseating.

When one of the girls who formed the group was interviewed, she said things had gotten out of hand...that the group was just a way of protesting prostitution in their town.

By throwing things and the most marginalized on the streets!? Do they think by shaming them, they will leave the streets?

I wasn't sure where to put this so I thought I would put it here and hope people find it.
I wanted to Thank absolutly everyone who has written me words of encouragement, sent me things I should l read and allowed me the privilege of being someone they would confide in and share their pain/challenges/triumphs with.
I thank those who wrote me with their opposing views and challenged me on things I have said, for it has made me research and try to fully understand what I am saying and analyze what I believe in my heart to be true.
I realize I am on a steep learning curve and am working on educating myself on the issues I am passionate about.
However I just wanted to say that my profile on facebook is a bit of a haven for me, in that it is only meant for those I have close personal relationships with, my children are on there as are other members of my family and it is a space for me to be... me....
So I thought I would just address the friend requests and messages that sit in limbo in my box.
I don't want to out right deny you for I am sure we have much in common but I also cannot accept as my profile is my safe place.
If you want to communicate with me please do so through Orato.com as I welcome contact through my profile page.
