Kenny Versus Spenny: Behind The Scenes And Below The Belt

Kenny Vs. Spenny

Kenny Hotz and Spencer Rice have been friends since childhood...but you wouldn't know it. Spenny says Kenny's a diabolical monster, and Kenny says Spenny's a ____. (Can we use that word on television?) They make millions laugh each week by documenting a series of competitions and humiliations in their hit comedy show Kenny vs. Spenny. Just when you thought television couldn't shock you, it will. Warning: This story is rated R for graphic content, which is inappropriate for younger readers. Parental discretion advised.

Spenny

When Kenny and I aren’t working on Kenny vs. Spenny, we go our separate ways. The show obviously puts a strain on our friendship, but we also have other interests. I've developed a pilot show for Family Channel and written six scripts, so I'm busy with other things.

Victoria Principal played a big role in setting me on the path I’m on today… actually it was her breasts more than anything. I’m a big fan of Dallas and always have been. It just happened that my mother was dating an actor who was a semi-regular on Dallas, so I got to go to the set. It had a profound effect on my vocation.

I started out as a blues musician. Ultimately I felt the music wasn’t authentic to who I was, and writing and creating comedy was much more so. I stopped playing the blues for money and got into show business, starting out as a production assistant on the children’s show Dudley the Dragon. Later Kenny and I wrote a script together for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

My first impression of Kenny? Kenny’s funny and fun to be around. Our fathers were friends, we went to the same school, and we were very close for a long, long time – closer than we are now, but of course we’re grown men now.

Kenny's become a bit of a monster to me. I don’t know if it’s the celebrity thing, but Kenny’s very into being famous and being a star. He’s completely willing to trash my mother on the show and make up absurd lies about me.

It’s actually good that the lies are so outrageous, since everybody knows it's not true that I’m a hermaphrodite, that I’m the back alley rapist or that I hate Jesus.

I f*cking love this show. Pardon my "French" - I think I picked up a few bad habits from talking with Kenny for half an hour the other day. Both of the guys said that they are always surprised when women enjoy their show. I can't explain it, but I thoroughly enjoy their disgusting and shocking sense of humor. It's so bad, it's good.

For me, it's hard to pick a favorite between Kenny versus Spenny. One without the other wouldn't be as funny. They both bring some pretty funny things to the table.

I don't think too many people know about Kenny Hotz's serious work, when he photographed the Gulf War et cetera. And to think Spenny is working with Family Channel!! Talk about conflict of interest!

I do think they love each other more than they let on, but both stayed true to the show's dynamic and trashed each other's mothers during our interviews.

It was so enjoyable and I highly recommend the octopus episode. (Although I did have some bad dreams the night I watched "Who Can Stay Tied To A Goat The Longest" episode.)

I've watched this show a few times, and I always root for Spenny (the nice guy), I just find kenny annoying as hell, and I wonder how he lives with himself, if its not limited to his on-air persona...at the end of the day, i usually feel bad for Spenny, and bad for myself for having spent an hour watching this show ;-)

Go Spenny!
