I was surfing the Net when I went to CNN and saw the breaking news headline. Details about what happened are still coming out, but it seems the actor, most famous for his role in the Oscar-caliber Brokeback Mountain, was discovered dead by a maid in a Manhattan apartment.
A mixture of prescription pills, including sleeping pills, and over the counter medication was reportedly found in his fourth floor apartment. Heath was found naked face down at the foot of his bed. The cause of death stands officially as "unknown." Heath had spoken openly about his recent insomnia and may have been suffering from pneumonia. The new news is that the maid reportedly called Mary Kate Olsen twice before calling 911. The other news is that the Westboro Baptist Church is planning to protest at his funeral, which disgusts me to no end.
I don't know a whole lot about Heath Ledger. Perhaps that's why I like him so much - some of my most favorite celebrities are the ones I know nothing about, such as Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp and Daniel Day Lewis. I'm not inundated with useless information about thier personal lives, and they hold a certain intrigue that captures and holds my attention.
Here's what I know about Heath He was a Hollywood heartthrob, he has a daughter with former fiance Michelle Williams, and he was one talented actor, having been nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in Brokeback Mountain. I also know he stars as The Joker in the upcoming Batman movie, The Dark Knight, which may go down as the last movie he ever made (he was also filming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which has a release date of 2009.

By luyen, January 22, 2008 at 20:47I haven't seen brokeback mountain, but i've heard of Heath Ledger - all i can say, is that whenever someone dies so young, with so much to offer, it's very very sad. I'm sure there will be a lot of speculation regarding the causes of his death, but we all send him good thoughts on his journey onward...

By Heather Wallace, January 23, 2008 at 06:13Hey Lu - Yes, I watched a lot of coverage last night, and there was SO much speculation. Early reports were painting it as a simple accidental or purposeful overdose and possible addiction, but there were also reports that he had been suffering from pneumonia and exhaustion, so it's not necessarily as MarilynMonroe-esque as it seems. Early reports also said that pills were "strewn about," but the examiners actually pointed out that medications were simply found in the apartment, (not all around him). There was no note and no clear evidence of suicide. His family insists it was an accident. The toxicology reports should be back today.
I'm sure it will be hard to get your hands on for a while, but you must see Brokeback Mountain, if only for his performance.

By Heather Wallace, January 22, 2008 at 16:34My deepest condolences to his family. It's incredibly sad.
I would definitely say it's a tragedy of James Dean proportions, if not more. Tonight I spent an hour in tears over it. I think anyone who saw him in Brokeback Mountain can't help but have fallen a little in love with him. His performance was superb.
Because he was so private, that's all I really know about who he was - a gifted actor. The world will miss out on what would have been a stellar career. Matilda will miss her father, and Michelle Williams (even though they were separated) will miss part of her heart.

By Michelle Kenneth, January 22, 2008 at 15:40Something the media is completely surprised about right now is that the cops were informed at 3:27PM that Heath Ledger was dead. In no time, it was all over the media. This has been the fastest reporting death in history.
Heath has always stayed under the radar. A lot of people didn't know that he and Michelle Williams had broken up. He's always been great about staying out of the paparazzi tabloids.
It's sad that he's gone, because I used to have a big crush on him back in the day. He was a great actor.
