When my husband first started watching Battlestar Galactica, I cringed. With a stack of Star Wars comic books already piled beside our bed and a room full of Lord of the Rings miniature models, I didn’t think our marriage could withstand any more “geek” factor (I joke, of course, but dealing with yet another one of his sci-fi interests didn't thrill me). However, in just a few weeks he had managed to convert me - I stand before you today a true Galactica fan anxiously awaiting the start of the fourth season.

If you’re not familiar with the series, here’s the scoop: In a distant part of the universe, a civilization of humans lived on planets known as the Twelve Colonies. The Cylons, intelligent robots created by humans, were used as slaves and soldiers to fight humanity's wars. But the Cylons became sentient and rebelled.

With the help of a quirky human scientist named Gaius Baltar, the Cylons launched a sudden sneak attack on the Colonies, destroying their planets and devastating their populations.

A few thousand humans managed to flee into space. Known as the Colonial Fleet, the civilian population was protected by the aging Battlestar Galactica, which appeared to be the only military ship to have survived the attack. Under the leadership of Commander Adama, the Battlestar Galactica and her crew, along with the newly-elected and somewhat controversial president Laura Roslin, take up the task of leading the ragtag fleet of survivors to the fabled refuge known as Earth.

Sounds pretty geeky, huh? For several weeks, I endured one or two hours of Battlestar Galactica playing in the background at home each night. My boss at the time was also a huge fan and he couldn’t stop talking about the series either, particularly about Tricia Helfer, the Canadian supermodel playing the ultra-sexy cylon Number Six.

Like a Viper under attack by Cylon raiders, Battlestar Galactica had jumped into my life and I was being hit from every angle. Eventually, I cracked.

Steve was well into season two before I started peeking in from the kitchen to see what was going on. I knew I was in trouble when I actually used “frak” in a sentence – I think I surprised myself as much as I did my husband when that came flying out of my mouth.

Thanks Melkor! It IS nice to see a woman taking the hard line - you're quite right. Since I live in Vancouver, I'm going to try to get onset for a day while they shoot season four ... wish me luck!

Great frakin' article! The ability to change one's mind is an earmark of wisdom so well done Robyn! I would like to add that one reason the show is so entertaining, along with the obvious parallels to the current international state of things, is the relationship between the senior Adama and President Roslin - interesting to me that the alpha male is a woman who consistantly takes the hard line while the battle hardened commander supplies the sober second thoughts. It is very rare that television or movies have strong woman characters playing major roles - something this show does very well and other could gleen lessons from.
